These spools serve as carriers for winding electrical wires, cables, optical fibers, enameled wires, and textile yarns. As a critical link in the upstream supply chain for the cable and textile industries, the quality of a spool mold directly determines the dimensional accuracy, dynamic balance, and overall production efficiency of the final spool products.

Core Structure and Process Characteristics

Spool molds are a typical type of injection mold for rotational parts. Since spool products usually feature a standard "I" or "H" shaped structure and require extremely high concentricity, the mold design involves unique technical considerations.

In terms of structural design, spool molds typically adopt a single-cavity or multi-cavity layout. For larger or heavy-duty cable reels with high precision requirements, a single-cavity design is often used to ensure uniform injection pressure and product dynamic balance. For smaller spools, such as those for enameled wires or sewing threads, highly efficient multi-cavity structures (such as 1-out-of-4 or 1-out-of-8) are commonly employed.

The gating system of the mold mostly utilizes pinpoint gates or submarine (tunnel) gates. This design not only achieves automatic gate degating—reducing subsequent manual trimming—but also effectively minimizes the impact of the gate mark on product appearance and dynamic balance. Regarding the ejection mechanism, since the inner bore of the spool usually has a draft angle, the mold is equipped with precision stripper sleeves (sleeve ejectors) or an ejector plate. This ensures the product is ejected with uniform force, preventing deformation or stress marks. Additionally, to guarantee stable operation under high temperature and pressure, an efficient cooling water channel system is crucial, as it directly determines the length of the injection molding cycle.

Mold Materials and Manufacturing Precision

The material selection for spool molds is directly related to their service life and the surface quality of the products. For high-volume production of standard plastic spools, mold manufacturers typically use high-quality pre-hardened steels (such as P20 or 718), which offer excellent polishing and machining properties. For molds requiring a long lifespan capable of withstanding millions of open-and-close cycles, or for producing products containing reinforced materials like glass fiber, harder steels such as S136 or H13 are selected. These are often subjected to vacuum heat treatment to ensure the mold possesses exceptional wear and corrosion resistance.

In terms of manufacturing precision, the core of a spool mold lies in controlling the concentricity between the core and the cavity. Modern mold manufacturing widely adopts CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) technologies, combined with high-precision CNC machining centers and mirror-finish EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining). This allows the tolerances of the mold's core components to be controlled within an extremely small range. This not only ensures perfect symmetry between the left and right flanges and the barrel of the spool but also guarantees that the spool will not jump or wobble during high-speed winding processes.
